The Dress from the Palmwood wreck

One of the top pieces in the collection at Museum Kaap Skil is a seventeenth century dress of royal allure, surfaced from the bottom of the Wadden Sea. The precious garment has remained practically intact despite a stay of almost four centuries on the sea floor.

The Wedding dress from the Palmwood Wreck

A lady wearing this dress would have been the dazzling centrepiece of the marriage ceremony. A richly decorated dress with woven silver discs and embroidered patterns of silver thread.

Toiletry set from the Palmwood Wreck

Amongst the textile finds from the Palmwood Wreck are a number of objects which would have belonged on the dressing table of a very affluent lady. This was probably a complete toiletry set.

Bronze cannon

An enormous bronze cannon from 1638, possibly from VOC ship the Rob.

The Cup from the Palmwood wreck

A gilt silver cup, surfaced from a 17th century ship wreck laying on the bottom of the Wadden Sea. Personal belongings from the richest years of the 17th century were found in this so-called Palmwood wreck.

Fluyt ship cross-section

Take a look aboard a fluyt!Fluyts were extremely suitable for transporting large quantities of bulk goods, such as grain or wood. They weren’t fast but they were efficient.

The Wezenputten (orphanage wells) money chest

A metal money chest 72 x 38,5 x 42 cm. It is the chest in which the proceeds from selling ferrous (containing lots of iron) water were kept. That water was sold to sailing vessels anchored on the Roads of Texel.

Bookbinding from the Palmwood Wreck

In the Palmwood Wreck, two ship chests with at least 32 bookbindings were found. One of the most remarkable bindings was a calf leather bookbinding with royal stamp.

Red Bodice from the Palmwood Wreck

One of the most well-preserved articles of clothing found in the Palmwood Wreck. A lined bodice made of red brocade with back pieces made of dark red damask.

Oriental robe from the Palmwood wreck

This garment was found in a seventeenth-century Palmwood wreck. Scientists from the School of Historical Dress in London have identified it as an oriental robe.

Ebony cross-staff from the Palmwood Wreck

Two fragments of a cross-staff with the initials of the maker and the year 1636.
